Reading at Pollyplatt Primary School
Social Reading Areas
These areas are created to:
- Celebrate our love for reading.
- Encourage reading anywhere and anytime.
- Have the time to just sit and read.
- Have calm and quiet spaces for reading.
- Be able to socialise in reading time and discuss preferences.
- To explore our interests further.
Our librarians have an important role to play in developing a love of reading for all children. They receive regular training throughout the year, on how to share books with younger children in school, which they do during lunchtimes.
They help organise reading events, and run the school social reading areas.
They allow us to be scientists, geographers, historians, artists and musicians.
Our social reading areas are filled with fiction and non-fiction books:
The Den: Filled with Geography, History, Music and Art books and resources. This room is filled with books and stories about people who have made great and influential achievements,
The Lab: Filled with STEM books. This is an area filled with stories and books about scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians. We can read and explore great ideas and concepts that makes the world work around us!
The Hub: Filled with KS1 Non- fiction books for our younger readers.
The Story Den: Filled with beautiful engaging picture books from a range of authors and illustrators. This is a colourful and relaxing area for us to enjoy reading short stories together.
These areas are not only used to support our learning, but they are open to for us to spend time and read for our pleasure during lunch times. Our reading warriors are in charge of these areas, they are available at lunch times to help us too. They even share some of their favourite stories through lunch Story Times!
How it all begins...
Reading for pleasure starts, when the children join us in Reception. Reading is woven into the classroom and the curriculum with a focus book every one to two weeks.
Children have access to books in all areas of the provision, both inside and outside. Cosy reading areas are created so that children have the chance to sit and enjoy a story, by themselves, with a friend or with a teacher.
Books, which are read aloud during story time, are carefully chosen; however sometimes they are picked by the children or staff, simply because it is one of their favourites!
Children are encouraged to share stories and retell them in their own words, they have the chance to explore different books, written by the same authors that they are familiar with.
Our Classroom Reading Areas
Every classroom has a reading area, with carefully selected books, written by both well-known and new authors which are selected by our teachers. We like to make suggestions on books we like to see in our reading areas.
Each class has up to 30 books displayed for us to choose from and read for pleasure. We love creating a reading culture within our classrooms, by recommending books to each other and reading the same books as our peers in reading buddies.
We use our classroom reading areas every day, especially during our independent reading time or when we read in our ‘reading buddies’.
Story Times
Our story times are precious. We engage with a wide range of stories, which are read by our teachers, at least once a day.
Our teachers carefully select these stories for us, which not only helps us learn about new authors but also teaches us new vocabulary and takes us on exciting journeys.
Our teachers love reading! They love to share stories and their own experiences. Teachers carefully select texts for our classroom libraries, depending on our reading interests, which means our classrooms are filled with a variety of books to choose from.
